Mechelen - the city

With those words, The Guardian tipped Mechelen as a must-visit destination for a weekend getaway. The newspaper describes Mechelen as “a majestic Flemish city dotted with Renaissance palaces, great bars and eye-catching contemporary art,” and “a surprisingly grand and opulent city that in the 16th century was the capital of most of the Low Countries – Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.”
Multi-faceted Mechelen is easy to reach and full of surprises. With over 300 listed buildings, many picturesque streets, UNESCO heritage sites and time-honoured traditions, this city on the Dyle feels like a pocket-sized world city. Though innovative and progressive, Mechelen’s past continues to play an important role.
The city centre is compact and easy to navigate: in just half an hour, you can walk from east to west or north to south. All the city’s highlights are within walking distance of one another. Take your time to look around as you stroll. Historic buildings and narrow streets will transport you back in time. Get a taste of Mechelen in its many quaint cafés and restaurants. You won’t feel rushed, as the city centre is largely car-free.
